Von Essen über Pécs nach Istanbul:
Die Europäischen Kulturhauptstädte 2010

Drei Städte tragen dieses Jahr den Titel als Europäische Kulturhauptstadt. Ihre Konstellation ermöglicht einen spannenden Blick auf den Kontinent:
Essen und das Ruhrgebiet als Inbegriff des »alten«, industriellen Europas, als Synonym für Kohle- und Montanindustrie. Pècs – die kleine Stadt im Süden Ungarns, geprägt von ihrer ethnischen und kulturellen Vielfalt mit eine der ältesten Universitäten der Welt. Und schließlich die Megastadt Istanbul – eine Stadt, auf zwei Kontinenten gelegen, zwischen Moderne und Kultureller Tradition, die uns mit den aktuellen Fragen Europas konfrontiert: von der EU-Erweiterung bis hin zur allgemeinen, gesellschaftspolitischen Auseinandersetzung mit den islamisch geprägten Ländern.

From Essen via Pécs to Istanbul:
The European Cultural Capitals 2010

The cities Essen and the Ruhr Area in Germany, Pécs in Hungary and Istanbul in Turkey are designated by the European Union as the European Capitals of Culture 2010.
The choice of European Union’s Jury will present an interesting, exciting view of the European continent.
Essen and the Ruhr Area symbolize the old European Industry with the European Coal and Steel Community also called Montan-Union.
Pécs, a little town situated in the south of Hungary, is characterized by its ethnic and cultural diversity and the long tradition in the fields of science with one of the oldest universities of the world.
The mega city Istanbul located on the European and Asian site of the Bosphorus between cultural tradition and modernity confront us with the issue of the European Union extension’s and the socio-political dealing with Muslim countries.
