Neben der Musik waren es die Bilder, die mein Leben prägten. An der Kunsthochschule Mainz studierte ich Malerei, später an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Dort kam ich mit der Fotografie in Berührung und war so fasziniert von diesem Medium, dass ich mich nach dem Studium ganz der Fotografie zuwandte. Entscheidend war für mich dabei die unausweichliche Nähe zur Realität, die ich als Fotograf eingehen musste. Ich konnte nicht mehr, wie als Maler oder Bildhauer, meine Sujets frei erfinden. Ich war gebunden an das, was vor meiner Kamera stattfand und musste mich deswegen viel unmittelbarer mit der Realität auseinandersetzen. Ich musste mich sozusagen der Realität »aussetzen«, um zu den von mir gesuchten Bildern zu gelangen. Genau das macht es bis heute oft so schwer – aber genau das macht für mich die Faszination dieses Mediums aus.
Neben meinen freien Projekten arbeitete ich über 20 Jahre lang für internationale Magazine, in Deutschland insbesondere für den STERN, daneben auch für den SPIEGEL, FOCUS, GEO oder MERIAN. 1994 wurde ich von der Fotografengruppe BILDERBERG aufgenommen und gehörte ihr bis deren Auflösung 2008 an. Von 2005 bis 2022 lehrte ich an der Hochschule Mainz als Professor für Fotografie. Ich lebe in Köln und auf Sizilien – bedingt durch meine italienische Ehefrau. Im Moment zeitweise auch in Albanien.

Besides music, it has been pictures that have shaped my life. I studied painting at the Kunsthochschule Mainz and later at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. There I came into contact with photography and was so fascinated by this medium that I turned to photography completely after my studies. The decisive factor for me was the inescapable proximity to reality that I had to enter into as a photographer. I could no longer invent my subjects freely, as I could as a painter or sculptor. I was bound to what was happening in front of my camera and therefore had to deal with reality much more directly. I had to expose myself to reality, so to speak, in order to arrive at the images I was looking for. That's exactly what makes it so difficult to this day - but that's what makes this medium so fascinating for me.
In addition to my personal projects, I worked for over 20 years for international magazines, in Germany mainly for STERN, but also for SPIEGEL, FOCUS, GEO and MERIAN. In 1994, I was invited to join the BILDERBERG group of photographers and remained a member until they disbanded in 2008. From 2005 to 2022 I taught at Mainz University of Applied Sciences as a professor of photography. I live in Cologne and, due to my Italian wife, in Sicily – occasionally in Albania at the moment.
