Mehrfach begleitete ich Wolfgang Clement für den STERN, ob als Wirtschaftsminister und »Kronprinz« von Johannes Rau oder später dann als Ministerpräsident von Nordrhein Westfalen. Meist waren es irgendwelche Wahlkämpfe, die den Anlass dafür boten. Ich erinnere mich noch an den Morgen, als ich ihn bei seinem morgendlichen Joggen fotografieren dürfte. Er war tief beeindruckt, als ich zusammen mit meinem Assistenten und einem Fahrrad zum verabredeten Zeitpunkt in aller Frühe bei ihm klingelte. Denn ich hatte genau geplant, wie ich ihn am Rheinufer an seinem Wohnort Bonn fotografieren wollte, wie ich genau das Bild, das mir vorschwebte, realisieren konnte: den Ort, die Blickrichtung und auch den Zeitpunkt für das richtige Licht. Ich wollte nicht mit irgendeinem Teleobjektiv aus der Entfernung arbeiten, sondern mit einem Weitwinkel dicht neben ihm sein. Somit fuhr mein Assistent das mitgebrachte Fahrrad, und ich saß rittlings umgekehrt auf dem Gepäckträger und gab genaue Anweisungen über das Tempo und den Abstand. So etwas gefiel Wolfgang Clement, und er lud uns danach bei sich zuhause zum Kaffee ein.
I accompanied Wolfgang Clement several times for STERN-Magazine, whether as Economics Minister and »crown prince« of Johannes Rau or later as Minister President of North Rhine-Westphalia. It was usually an election campaign that provided the occasion. I still remember the morning when I was allowed to photograph him on his morning jog. He was deeply impressed when I rang his doorbell early in the morning with my assistant and a bicycle. I had planned exactly how I wanted to photograph him on the banks of the Rhine at his home in Bonn, how I could realise exactly the picture I had in mind: the location, the direction of view and also the time for the right light. I didn't want to work with just any telephoto lens from a distance, but wanted to be right next to him with a wide-angle lens. So my assistant rode the bike I had brought with me, and I sat reversed astride on the luggage rack and gave precise instructions about the speed and distance. Wolfgang Clement liked that sort of thing and invited us to his house for coffee afterwards.
