Stefan Enders hat sich aufgemacht, sein ganz persönliches Europa zu
entdecken. Und er hat Antworten bekommen wie diese von Charles Harkins:
»Ob ich mich als Europäer fühle? Keine Ahnung – ich bin Schotte.«
Niemand ahnte, welche Aktualität dieses Projekt bekommen würde, als Stefan Enders im März 2015 zu seiner Reise aufbrach. Als Fotograf wollte er etwas über die Menschen in der Europäischen Union erzählen. Und zwar nicht dort, wo man alles schon kennt, in den Zentren, sondern in den Rand- und Grenzregionen. Seine siebenmonatige Reise führte ihn 31.000 km entlang der gesamten Außengrenzen – von Schottland über Portugals bis zum äußersten Nordosten Skandinaviens. Einmal »rund um die Europäische Union«.
Mehr als 200 Menschen hat Enders dabei porträtiert. In seinen intensiven SW-Bildern zollt er allen den gleichen Respekt: dem Fabrikdirektor genauso wie dem Gewerkschaftsboss, der Arbeiterin, den Arbeitslosen bis hin zu den in Europa gestrandeten Flüchtlingen. Seine Farbaufnahmen betten das Projekt in die aktuelle historische Situation Europas ein. Herausgekommen ist eine Hommage an die Menschen dieses Europas, eine poetisch-kritische Auseinandersetzung voll Sympathie und Strahlkraft.

Nobody could have guessed how topical this project would be when Stefan Enders set off in March 2015. The photographer wanted to tell the story of people in the European Union, not from places that are already familiar, places at the centre, but from the fringes and border regions. His seven-month journey took him 31 000 km along the entire external border of the EU – from Scotland via Portugal, Greece and Romania to the extreme north-east of Scandinavia.
It was a »circumnavigation« of the EU, during which Enders created portraits of over 200 people. In his stark black-and-white photographs he pays equal respect to everyone: from the factory owner to the trade union boss, the working woman, unemployed people, as well as the refugees stranded in Europe. His colour photos embed the project in Europe's current historical situation.
The result is a homage to the people of this Europe, a poetical critique that is sympathetic and engaging.
