MENSCHEN IN MYANMAR
Myanmar, einst unter dem Namen Burma ein reiches Land, wird heute von einer grausamen und korrupten Militärdiktatur regiert und ist zu einem der ärmsten Staaten der Welt heruntergewirtschaftet worden. Ich fotografierte diese Serie im Jahr 2002, also lange vor dem Militärputsch im Jahre 2021 und der brutalen Repression der Militärjunta in den Jahren danach.
In den 2000er Jahren gab es trotz der bereits jahrzehntelangen Militärherrschaft mit der sogenannten Road Map die Hoffnung auf einen Weg zur Demokratie, verbunden mit dem Namen der Oppositionspolitikerin und Friedensnobelpreisträgerin Aung San Suu Kyi. Meine Arbeit ist im Kontext dieser Hoffnung auf Veränderung entstanden. Sie wurde direkt danach, im Jahr 2003, mit dem Fuji-Euro-Press-Photo-Award ausgezeichnet.

In der Kategorie Feature erhielt Enders den ersten Preis für seine Serie Menschen in Myanmar, einer fotografischen Annäherung an die Menschen und ihre Lebensumstände im fernöstlichen Burma. Ein Land, das durch die jahrelange Abschottung noch immer weitgehend unentdeckt und unbekannt ist.
Die prämierten schwarz-weiss Arbeiten stehen einerseits in der Tradition der klassischen Street-Photography. Auf der anderen Seite sucht Stefan Enders eigene, neue Wege der Bildsprache, so z.B. durch die Kombination des an sich eher statischen, quadratischen Mittelformates mit einer dynamischen Fotografie oder auch durch den bewussten und gezielten Einsatz von Blitzlicht.«

People of Myanmar
Myanmar, once a rich country known as Burma, is now ruled by a cruel and corrupt military dictatorship and was turned into one of the worlds poorest counties. The photo project was created in 2002, long before the military coup in 2021 and the brutal repression of the military junta in the years that followed.
In the 2000s, despite decades of military rule, there was hope for a path to democracy with the so-called Road Map, linked to the name of the opposition politician and Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi. The work was created in the context of this hope for change. The photo series was awarded the Fuji Euro Press Photo Award immediately after it was created in 2003.

In the feature category, Enders received first prize for his series People in Myanmar, a photographic approach to the people and their living conditions in the far eastern Burma. A country that is still largely undiscovered and unknown due to years of isolation.
On the one hand, the award-winning black and white works are in the tradition of classic street photography. On the other hand, Stefan Enders is looking for his own new ways of visual language, for example by combining the inherently static, square medium format with dynamic photography or through the conscious and targeted use of flash light.«
