 »WEIT WEG VON BRÜSSEL«

Stefan Enders hat sich aufgemacht, sein ganz persönliches Europa zu
entdecken. Und er hat Antworten bekommen wie diese von Charles Harkins:
»Ob ich mich als Europäer fühle? Keine Ahnung – ich bin Schotte.«

Niemand ahnte, welche Aktualität dieses Projekt bekommen würde, als Stefan Enders im März 2015 zu seiner Reise aufbrach. Als Fotograf wollte er etwas über die Menschen in der Europäischen Union erzählen. Und zwar nicht dort, wo man alles schon kennt, in den Zentren, sondern in den Rand- und Grenzregionen. Seine siebenmonatige Reise führte ihn 31.000 km entlang der gesamten Außengrenzen – von Schottland über Portugal, Griechenland und Rumänien, bis zum äußersten Nordosten Skandinaviens. Einmal »rund um die Europäische Union«. Mehr als 200 Menschen hat Enders dabei porträtiert. In seinen intensiven SW-Bildern zollt er allen den gleichen Respekt: dem Fabrikdirektor genauso wie dem Gewerkschaftsboss, der Arbeiterin, den Arbeitslosen bis hin zu den in Europa gestrandeten Flüchtlingen. Begleitet werden die Porträts von faszinierenden, oftmals berührenden Geschichten über die unterschiedlichen Lebenswirklichkeiten. Die Farbaufnahmen betten das Projekt in die aktuelle historische Situation Europas ein. Herausgekommen ist eine Hommage an die Menschen dieses Europas, eine poetisch-kritische Auseinandersetzung voll Sympathie und Strahlkraft.

“FAR FROM BRUSSELS”
Nobody could have guessed how topical this project would be when Stefan Enders set off in March 2015. The photographer wanted to tell the story of people in the European Union, not from places that are already familiar, places at the centre, but from the fringes and border regions. His seven-month journey took him 31 000 km along the entire external border of the EU – from Scotland via Portugal, Greece and Romania to the extreme north-east of Scandinavia. It was a “circumnavigation” of the EU, during which Enders created portraits of over 200 people. In his stark black-and-white photographs he pays equal respect to everyone: from the factory owner to the trade union boss, the working woman, unemployed people, as well as the refugees stranded in Europe. His colour photos embed the project in Europe’s current historical situation.

The result is a homage to the people of this Europe, a poetical critique that is sympathetic and engaging.

Die Arbeiten, die auf meiner siebenmonatigen Reise entlang der gesamten Außengrenzen – einmal rund um Europa – entstanden sind, werden vom 5. bis zum 27. Oktober in Brüssel nicht nur im Foyer vor dem Plenarsaal sondern auch auf der Straße gezeigt: In der Rue Wiertz, direkt vor dem EU-Parlament, werden über 40 der lebensgroßen »Europäischen Portraits« installiert, sie werden dann 4 Wochen lang den EU-Parlamentariern »in die Augen schauen«. Danach wird die Ausstellung unter der Schirmherrschaft der EU auf Europa-Reise gehen.

“FAR FROM BRUSSELS”
The work of my seven-month trip along all the outer borders – once around Europe – will be shown not only in the foyer in front of the plenary hall but also on the street from 5th to 27th October in Brussels: right in front of the EU Parliament, more than 40 of the life-size “European Portraits” will be installed in Rue Wiertz, – they will then “look into the eyes” of the EU parliamentarians for four weeks. After that, the exhibition will be under the patronage of the EU on an European tour.

Der 7. Mai war ein ganz gewöhnlicher Freitag. Und doch wird er für lange Zeit in Erinnerung bleiben. Denn an diesem Tag reisten 432 Fotografen durch ganz Deutschland, um festzuhalten, was vor ihrer Kamera geschah: in Schulen und Wohnzimmern, auf Fußballplätzen und Flughäfen, in Parlamenten und Diskotheken. Sie sind über die Dörfer und durch Großstädte gefahren und haben nach Momenten Ausschau gehalten, die dieses Land repräsentieren.

The 7th of May was an ordinary Friday, and yet it will be remembered for a long time. Because on that day 432 photographers travelled throughout Germany with their cameras to capture what took place: in schools and living rooms, on football grounds and airports, in parliaments and discotheques. They travelled through villages and towns and were on the lookout for moments which represent this country.

1985 erhielt Stefan Enders als Student den Kunstpreis des Mainzer Kunstvereins Eisenturm. Genau 20 Jahre später wurde er als Professor für Fotografie an die Fachhochschule Mainz berufen und kehrte in seine Heimatstadt zurück.
Die ausgestellten Arbeiten sind in diesem Zeitraum an ganz unterschiedlichen Orten entstanden; sie sind jedoch als ein zusammenhängender, übergreifender Zyklus zu sehen.

In 1985, Stefan Enders, at that time still a student, was awarded with the »Kunstpreis« of the Mainzer Kunstverein. Exactly 20 years later he was appointed Professor for photography at the University of Applied Science in Mainz, and thus returned to his hometown.
The exhibited photographs, taken during this period of 20 years, originate from different places. However, they can be regarded as a cohesive and interrelated work.

Normalerweise ist der Fotograf Stefan Enders alleine für die Bild-Gestaltung eines Artikels verantwortlich, wenn er in der Welt unterwegs ist, um Reportagen für
Magazine zu erarbeiten; genauso geht es dem Illustrator Felix Scheinberger, wenn er Bücher oder Artikel illustriert.
Jetzt haben sie zusammen ein gemeinsames Projekt in Istanbul realisiert, – wie sieht der Fotograf die Welt, wie der Illustrator? Spannend war für sie das gemeinsame, parallele Arbeiten vor Ort, aber auch das spätere Zusammenfügen des Materials zu einem gemeinsamen, sich ergänzenden Ergebnis.Passend zum Türkei-Thema der diesjährigen Frankfurter-Buchmesse präsentieren sie ihre Arbeiten in einer Ausstellung im Abgeordnetenhaus des Mainzer Landtages.(Veröffentlicht in einer großen Bildstrecke in »Designers Digest«.)

Photography & Illustration
What does the world out there actually look like? Every day, photographers and illustrators – each on their own path – set off to discover, research and explore. Each sees the world in his own way, processing it with his particular tool of choice. Photographer Stefan Enders and Illustrator Felix Scheinberger agreed to undertake a joint venture working together on a project in Istanbul.The creative work process was inspiring and fruitful as well as the assembling of contrary material to an exciting collective result complementing each other.
The work was shown in an exhibition in Germany and was published in the Magazine »Designers Digest«.

Menschen in Myanmar

Ausstellung im fotografischen Zentrum Zingst 2006.

Myanmar, einst unter dem Namen Burma ein reiches Land, wird heute von einer grausamen und korrupten Militärdiktatur regiert und ist zu einem der ärmsten Staaten der Welt heruntergewirtschaftet worden. Die ausgestellte Arbeit wurden direkt nach ihrem Entstehen im Jahr 2003 mit dem Fuji-Euro-Press-Photo-Award ausgezeichnet.

People in Myanmar/Burma

Exhibition in 2206, Zingst/Germany

In former years Myanmar/Burma was a rich and wealthy country. Now it is controlled by a brutal and corrupt military dictatorship and was turned into one of the worlds poorest counties. The presented pictures were awarded with the Fuji-Euro-Press-Photo-Award in 2003.
